SCIENCE TIMES TRIVIA:

Q:  Did you know that Martian Sunsets are blue?  Do you know why?

A:  Martian sunsets are blue because of the fine dust in the atmosphere that absorbs blue light.  This gives the sky its red color, but it also scatters the blue light into the area around the sun.  The blue color becomes visible during sunset and sunrise when the light has to pass through the largest amount of dust.

Tech Trivia Tuesday

Pure water is clear, so why is the ocean blue?

It's because colors with longer wavelengths, like red are more easily absorbed by water while shorter wavelengths like blue scatter and are reflected.  The reason water can also be colors like red and green is because some sediment can absorb and reflect different colors.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Welcome back to the new school year. Your continued partnership with us is more important than ever as we strive to ensure your child excels this school year and beyond. To further support you, our teachers, counselors, and social workers will continue administering the Devereaux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) that was introduced last year.

The DESSA is a strength-based Social Emotional Screener that asks questions about areas of social-emotional functioning including decision making, relationship building, confidence, and others. This tool is completed by someone who knows your child really well—in most cases a teacher.

Through use of the DESSA last year, we were able to build on each student’s strengths while identifying the social-emotional skills they needed to further develop. When the students’ growth areas were identified, we developed a highly responsive plan to target, strengthen, and enhance those skills in the most appropriate manner and settings.

The results of this screener will not be included on report cards, will not have any impact on grades, and will not be used to make any diagnostic or evaluation decisions. The results will be stored securely in an online portal that meets the DOE’s strictest privacy and security settings and will only be viewable by your child(ren)’s teachers and select school staff such as the principal or counselor. We will be implementing the DESSA beginning in November.

In addition to a staff member completing the DESSA screener for your student, there is a Student Self Rating (SSR) process as well. The SSR is an opportunity for your student to rate themself using the DESSA. SSR honors DOE’s commitment to student voice and our belief that students are important partners in their own learning and development. Having students complete a self-assessment, alongside the teacher assessment, will strengthen our understanding of their needs and our ability to support them.

WHAT PARENT / GUARDIAN NEEDS TO DO TO CONSENT FOR THEIR CHILD:

If you DO NOT WANT your child to participate in SSR, no action is needed.  If YOU CONSENT to your child participating in DESSA Student Self Rating (SSR), please log into NYCSA (https://www.schoolsaccount.nyc/) and sign the required consent form by October 17, 2022. Instructions on how to consent are provided here:  https://bit.ly/SITHSDessa

WHAT DO I DO IF I DON’T WANT A FACULTY MEMBER CONDUCTING THE DESSA SURVEY FOR MY CHILD:

If you do not want a staff member to complete the DESSA screener for your student, you must complete this Opt-Out Survey (https://bit.ly/SITHSDessaOptOut) by Monday, Oct 31.

Please take a moment to review the instructions for ALL STUDENTS for the the 11th Grade PSAT / 9th & 10th Grade Math & ELA Screener Test & Senior Breakfast taking place on Wednesday, October 12th.

9th & 10th Graders:

On Wednesday, October 12th, there will be a special schedule where all freshmen and sophomores will be completing MAP Testing. MAP tests are diagnostic tests in Math and ELA that are used as a tool for educators to best help identify their students learning needs.  Scores on these tests DO NOT count for any grade.

The exam will begin at 9:30am students should enter from the cafeteria. Breakfast will be available in the cafetria starting at 8am.  Students will need a laptop, Chromebook, or iPad to take this exam. Please check to see that your device is compatible for the exam at check.nwea.org. iPads need to download the NWEA app prior to coming to school.  If you do not have a device or your device does not pass the check please complete the Device request form by 10/7.  MAP testing has a built in calculator, however students can bring their own if they’d prefer.

Students will be dismissed at 1:00pm and there will be lunch available in the cafeteria.

If you have any questions please feel free to email: [email protected]

11th Graders:

On Wednesday, October 12th, there will be a special schedule where all juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMQST. This exam allows for practice for the SAT as well as qualifying for a National Merit Scholar. All juniors MUST take the exam.

All students should arrive by 8:45 am through the cafeteria. The cafeteria will be open for breakfast starting at 8am. Room assignments will be shared in the cafeteria on Tuesday 10/11. The exam will end at approximately 1 pm and there will be lunch available in the cafeteria.

Students NEED #2 pencils (not mechanical) and a calculator is recommended although not required.

The cost of the exam is $20 and a link to payment will be sent via Operoo the week of the exam. You may qualify for a fee waiver based on your Family Income Inquiry Form. If you have not yet completed it, please do so by October 4th in order to meet the deadline for this exam.  If families do not fill out the form by October 4th, the fee cannot be waived.

Students will be dismissed at 1:00pm and there will be lunch available in the cafeteria.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email: [email protected]

12th Graders:

Wednesday, October 12th, Senior Breakfast, there will be a 10 AM - 10:30 AM Arrival.

Report to the Softball field upon arrival for attendance, and verification of the spelling of your name for the Senior Pages of the yearbook. Your legal name goes on the senior pages. We will also take your name preference for the cover tag (i.e. my legal name is Thomas Terrusa, so that will appear in the book on the senior pages, but for the cover tag I put Tommy).

Following attendance, we will be lining you up to take the 23 photo. We will start lining up for the photo by 10:30. If you are not on time, you may not be in the photo. Remember, even though it is a short day for you all, attendance is still required.

After the photo, you will line up one more time to start getting measured for your graduation gown and Senior T-Shirt.

After Graduation Gown & T-Shirt measurements, you will continue on the line to pick-up your breakfast.

While you are enjoying breakfast with your friends,

  • the Yearbook Superlative Nominations will be handed out along with some other senior reminders.
  • One of the important senior reminders is the Blurb, Quote, and Baby Picture Google Form. This form is due the 12th.
  • If you have a physical copy of a baby picture that you would like us to scan and add to the yearbook, please bring it with you on Wednesday.
  • Someone from the Yearbook staff will scan the pictures and give the pictures back to you after we check the quality.

In the end, seniors will be dismissed by 1:00pm as long as we finish everything mentioned above.

It is sure to be a great, and fun day. Just remember that the more you all cooperate, the faster we can get through things so that you can sit with your friends and work on things like the superlatives. You are not allowed to leave earlier, and please bring your ID because you may still be asked to scan in for the day. Lastly, in the beginning of the school year we collected your signatures for the yearbook. If we did not receive your signature or the quality was not good, please know that we will be asking for you to redo it.

10/4/2022

I’ve updated the October Calendar on the Landing Page (bit.ly/SITHSLandingPage) for easy access. There are LOTS of exciting happening this month, so be sure to check Mr. Terrusa’s Activities Updates as well.

For those who are celebrating Yom Kippur, G'mar Chatima Tovah!

There are also two exciting opportunities I want to bring to students & parents attention:

Future Ready Healthcare Initiative: Our school has been selected by the New York City Department Of Education to participate in a Health Care initiative that would engage students in course work, professional discourse, and Work Based Learning (WBL) in Health Care.  In addition, we are announcing major partnerships with the Northwell Health Hospital System and the City University of New York. Learn more here.

SITHS Career Development Center: We are so happy that we are starting the school year with positivity, optimism and enthusiasm! Here in the Career Development Center, we are committed to continuing our mission of preparing, informing, educating, and offering opportunities that will prepare you to help consider what your future careers may be and get ready for the journey ahead. The best way to prepare for the future college, career, and life experiences for tomorrow is to practice them today with real-world experiences. How do you do that when the world is in such a rapid flux? This is nothing new! A generation ago, people preparing for the next step did not have cell phones and computers in their homes and pockets. The world has always changed rapidly. With the help of the SITHS CDC and the overall program you experience at Staten Island Tech, we are confident you will be prepared for anything that is ahead of you. Click here to learn more about how you can enroll in Work Based Learning / Internship opportunities and more!

10/3/2022

Welcome to the 2nd month of the 2022-23 school year.

I’ve updated the October Calendar on the Landing Page (bit.ly/SITHSLandingPage) for easy access. There are LOTS of exciting happening this month, so be sure to check Mr. Terrusa’s Activities Updates as well.

Please keep in mind that as of 10/3 the only way to view child’s academic progress is to ask your child to view their Google Classroom gradebook, or to ask them to share their username / password with you for the time being.

While this will be a temporary process for the time being, there will be a report card / progress report provided in mid-November at the conclusion of Marking Period 1, which will serve as an update to your child’s progress thus far.

I know that many of you are used to having the convenience of instant access to information via Pupil PupilPath and that the absence of this process is a new experience. Please be patient and rest assured, by February, we’re hopeful and remain optimistic that we will be able to introduce the NYC DOE Grading system. The reason why we instituted the November (paper) Progress Report is to ensure there is communication with our families regarding academic progress.

If you didn’t get a chance to hear my comments regarding these topics recently, the links to the September PTA Meeting and the Principal Chit Chat for New Families are shared below to view at your pleasure.

COVID TEST DISTRIBUTION: Please note that as per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the expiration date on iHealth tests you received last school year and over the summer have been extended by 9–12 months. Therefore, even if the expiration date is approaching, or has passed recently, these tests are acceptable for use. For COVID-19 guidance for the 2022–23, review the School Health Policy InfoHub page.

Lastly, as is tradition, I have started to post pictures and videos of some of our classroom activities and events on our school’s social media pages. Please check out the latest happening at SI Tech through the eyes of your children for a unique first hand look.

Picture Day - Tue (9/13), Wed (9/14) & Thu (9/15)

Just a reminder that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this  week (9/13-9/15) are our school's Picture Days.

Linked here you will find the specific schedule so that you know which day your class is scheduled to have your picture taken.

To identify which day is YOUR picture day, you need the name of your Phys Ed teacher, and the period you have Phys Ed scheduled. Then look at the schedule for Tues, Wed and Thur TO MATCH your Phys Ed Teacher and Period, to identify your Picture Day.

A few weeks after Picture Day, Irvin Simon will send the parent/guardian emails they have on file access codes and information about how to purchase your pictures (if you would like). Remember, it's one pose for high school underclassmen. If you are absent or miss your scheduled picture day, make-ups will be conducted in November.

III. NEW MAKERSPACE COURSE:

Brand New MakerSpace Class Opportunity Launching in October of 2022

Have you been to the Staten Island Tech MakerSpace to do a class, group, or individual project?

Would you like to take a critical role in shaping the future of the Maker Movement at Staten Island Tech?

When we envisioned opening a Makerspace here at Tech years ago we wanted to offer an opportunity for students, teachers, and classes to have a space to design, fabricate, create, incubate, and showcase their artistic, industrial/commercial arts, inventions, woodworking, paintings, sculpting, fabrications with industrial tools, metalwork, using a power tool for the first time and cultivating creations.  Relationships with community partners, our school's Career Development Center, and our faculty have led to amazing opportunities, projects, and accolades.

Check out a small sampling of some impressive projects we have “made”!  Here are some highlights: MakerSpace Tweets

Under the direction of Mr. Charles Dazzo, Dr.  Jax, Mr. Manzo, Mr. Erlenwein, and the entire Technology / Engineering department of teachers, thousands of Tech students have had the opportunity to make and create through the years.

After Serving as a dedicated MakerSpace teacher for a number of amazing years, our beloved Mr. Dazzo has retired.  We owe him so much for helping our students do so many things such as stained glass, sewing, art, soldering, solar cells, and so much more were all explorations of hands-on creations that Mr. Dazzo introduced to our students.  Mr. Dazzo will still be around from time to time to support us, especially with the Solar Car Program and our expansions in Green technology like windmills.  We wish Mr. Dazzo great thanks.

We will be launching the makerspace this year with a new teacher, Ms. Amanda Stefanese.  Ms. Stefanese comes to us with a plethora of unique talents and experiences.  As a Fine Art / Commercial Art Career and Technology Education Teacher, Ms. Stefanese also has an impressive background in computer science, fashion and textile design, and business and marketing.  As one of the newest teachers at Staten Island Tech, Ms. Stefanese will help lead our students and teachers into a continuation and expansion of our Maker Movement, Project-Based Learning, and Incubator ambitions.

The first step will be in recruiting a class of students to become the “Maker / Artists” in Residency Class.

Course Description: Have you ever wanted your ideas to come to life? We are looking to recruit students for a MakersPace/Art Apprenticeship class. This will be a hands-on class focusing on manufacturing equipment and arts integration. You will also be able to support other students and classes as the “MakerSpace Residents” when students and classes use the makerspace to create their projects.  This Projects Based Learning class is focused on learning the tools and techniques available in the MakerSpace setting to develop and enrich our student's personal interests and projects that will be developed over the school year. Students will also assist our school with opening the MakerSpace to more students and faculty through additional teacher-based partnerships across the curriculum.  After completing the class, you may also be eligible for work-based learning and internship opportunities related to the school’s maker movement. This class is open for 9th - 12th graders!

If you are interested in this, please complete this initial interest form and we will see if it will work with your schedule.

MESSAGE FROM CHANCELLOR:

NYC DOE School Chancellor, David Banks Welcome Letter: Click Here

  • Translations are available via the link.

GRADING PLATFORM UPDATES:

As you may be aware, many schools are transitioning to a new Grading & Messaging platform, after the discontinuation of PupilPath, which many of you are familiar. The NYC DOE is also in the process of rolling out “their” new Grading, Messaging and Attendance platform. In the interim, while the new DOE system grows in functionality and other platforms are still being considered, Staten Island Tech will be using Google Classroom’s Gradebook feature to maintain and share a student’s academic data. Google Classroom has been a dependable tool that students, faculty & families are very familiar with and have perfected using before, during and after the Pandemic. We will be sharing more information on what protocols will be in place in the coming days that are important for you to know.

COMMUNICATIONS:

Naviance and the NYC DOE Messaging App: We will continue to use Naviance to send schoolwide communications with students & parents throughout the school year. If you have not registered on Naviance as a student or parent at this point, please contact Parent Coordinator, Barbara Malenfant, at [email protected] or 718-667-3222 Ext 1171 for assistance.

We will also be piloting the use of the NYC DOE’s new Messaging system, which allows for email, SMS and Robocall communication options. Being this is a new system, we will be testing how much of a reach the system has in communicating with parents, faculty and staff in the next few weeks.

Operoo: We will continue to use Operoo to distribute forms that need to be completed, signed and returned. New parents and students should keep an eye out for an email invite starting next week, on Monday, September 12th. If you need assistance  as a student or parent registering with Operoo, please contact Parent Coordinator, Barbara Malenfant, at [email protected] or 718-667-3222 Ext 1171 for assistance.

Email Directory:  You can use the “Keep In Touch” dropdown menu at the top of the bit.ly/SITHSLandingPage, where the email addresses and telephone extensions (Main Line: 718-667-3222) of School Administration, Guidance Counselors, Deans, COSA and Parent Coordinator are available. Please also use the www.siths.org faculty & staff email directory to contact teachers and staff.

NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) (https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learning/student-journey/nyc-schools-account):

In order for parents & guardians to take advantage of the many new messaging tools and ensure you DON’T miss any communications, it is urgent that parents / guardians make sure they’re contact information is up to date; especially mobile phone numbers.

NYCSA consolidates several important parent-facing applications in one place:

- MyStudent, for grades, attendance, transportation & Emergency Contact Info(Blue Card)

- Parent University

- Bullying Reporting online form

- Parents can reset the passwords to their child’s DOE email accounts through the Manage

More information will be sent out over the weekend.**

Also, starting tomorrow 12/1, our Annual Holiday Door Decorating Contest will kick-off! Teachers and students can start brainstorming ideas for their doors. December 1st: NHS Toy Drive (began November 28th)- For more information, below is the message sent from the NHS Advisor's & Officers:

Our National Honor Society is kicking off its Annual Holiday Toy Drive this week, where we donate toys to children who are in need.  Each year, through your generosity, we are able to collect and deliver toys to the Seamen’s Society for Children and Families.  This organization provides support for children in foster care.

Due to the great success and effort from our “ Tech Community”  in the past 17 years, the Seamen’s Society has relied on us for these donations.  No donation is too small.

There will be a Holiday Gift Registry at Target.  All toys purchased from this wish list will be shipped directly to the Seamen’s Society.

The link for the registry can be found here:SITHS_NHS_ToyDrive

December 5th: Winter Wonderland Talent Show Auditions- Please see the email that was sent out by Ms. Brown for more instructions and information. The auditions will be held in the auditorium after 9th period.

Gingerbread House kits will be on sale for a total of $15 starting tomorrow in the cafeteria. You can work together with teams of up to 5 students (so a team of 5 would mean the kit is $3 for each team-member). You are allowed to bring in more candy or decorative items, but they MUST be allergy free. Good luck to all involved!

December 16th: Winter Wonderland & Talent Show- Tickets will be on sale by the end of the week for our annual Winter Wonderland & Talent Show event. A general admission ticket is $5, or you can purchase a ticket that includes 2 slices of pizza and a water for $10. Winter Wonderland is comprised of small events that usually equal a lot of fun. December 19th-December 23rd: Holiday Dress-Up Week- Starting Monday, December 19th, we will begin our Holiday Dress-Up Week. On Monday, come in your favorite Holiday Pajamas to kick-off the week. Tuesday, continue the celebration by wearing your favorite Holiday Colors. Feeling frosty? Wear white. Grinchy? Wear green. Like candy canes? Dress up wearing red & white! There are so many other fun ideas to celebrate the holidays! Wednesday, we will celebrate Holiday Twin Day. Coordinate with your friends to dress alike and have some fun, school appropriate holiday fun. Thursday, we celebrate New Year's Eve! Dress up in a nice New Year's Eve outfit and come ready to take pictures with your friends. We will have backdrops set-up, and who knows what else could happen this day! Last, but certainly not least, we end Friday with our Ugly Sweater & Festive Sock Day! Keep an eye...and ear out for some fun surprises on the 23rd as well. As always, we want to have everyone participate in a safe, fun, and appropriate manner. So please remember that we are able to keep having activities like thse because of how you all handle yourselves. If you plan on participating on 1 day, or every day this week, please keep everything school appropriate and within in the guidelines of our school's dress code.

As always, regularly check your emails as I'm sure there will be more going on here at Tech. Enjoy the holiday season!

Sincerely,
