Healthcare summer internship opportunity
The Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP) is a six-week program for high school and college students interested in health careers. The program exposes students to health careers and the various health issues that affect their communities. Students will be encouraged to pursue health careers by having the opportunity to interact daily with physicians and other health care professionals. During the six-week period, 100 students will be placed in preceptor sites in Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island based on their fields of interest in health careers. The students will dedicate twenty hours a week to working at the sites. Students will be provided with intensive activities to include but not limited to; observation of the field, lectures, hospital tours, health awareness and study skills. Upon successful completion of the program, each student is awarded a Certificate of Achievement. Interested students will be paired with a mentor after completion of the program that will assist them in the development of professional skills and continued preparation into the health career workforce. Students will be tracked over the six-week period and up to one year after completion of the program and surveyed to determine the effectiveness of the program after completion. Preceptors will be surveyed to determine the effectiveness of the preparation of each student entry into the sites, student's performance and the effectiveness of match between student and site. An evaluation tool will be developed to determine the outcomes of the program based on objectives outlined to include statistical analysis of data from surveys completed by students, preceptors and mentors.
