Every year, SITHS hosts the Spaghetti Marshmallow Building Competition, sponsored by one of our long time business partners, the American Institute of Architects. Our student volunteers worked hard to make this event a success!

Annalise Knudson from SI Live visited the Tech Makerspace and interviewed innovative tech students Aiden Lublinsky and Tian Lin, in addition to several others, on projects they’ve been working on in our school’s versatile lab. Projects include contraptions such as bionic arms that can lift up to 180 lbs, an award-winning ergonomic keyboard, and our school’s impressive fully-functional solar powered car.

Staten Island’s successful solar car team was featured on the National Grid Foundation’s Destiny newsletter and website home page. The team snagged second place in the national competition last summer, in a race that spanned from Texas to California. Numerous students from various Staten Island schools make up the award-winning team, which is based in Staten Island Tech’s high-end makerspace lab. The team will continue to compete and improve the solar car’s design in the future.

Our 2018 Solar Car Team also made a stop at Downtown Breckenridge on Tuesday, July 17. Students from Staten Island came in second in the Advanced division of the competition.

On July 20, our solar car team made one of their first stops in UTEP to compete in the 2018 Solar Car Challenge in El Paso, Texas. High school students are in charge of building, maintaining, and racing the car 833 miles from Texas to California.
