ABOUT US

The SERP courses are designed to train students to conduct scientific research and compose a scientific research paper, with the ultimate goal of competing in the Working in Support of Education (W!SE) Quality of Life Innovations competition in sophomore year and in the New York City Science Engineering Fair (NYCSEF), Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) and city, state, and nationwide science fairs on their road to the top-tier Intel competition in junior and senior year.

"SERP allowed me to meet experts in my future career field and experience science in a way that I never have before. Having the opportunity to be published on a paper and have my work presenter at a conference is not only a great resume builder, but also an impressive accomplishment that makes all of my work worth it. We the students are the future, and working in a college laboratory allows us to prepare for this by placing us at the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Every class session encourages unity and community: our goals, interests, and research comes from every different scientific field, but we are able to find a common language to communicate and bond."

"When I first joined SERP as a freshman, I wasn't sure where it was going to take me. However, three years later, the experience has paid off immensely. From SERP, I gained a network of peers that, regardless of the diversity in our fields of study, are bound together because of our passion. My experience researching both in school and at a college laboratory has given me a greater awareness of what can be offered to the scientific community. Overtime, I have grown to have pride, not only in my work as a student researcher, but in my peers' accomplishments as well. SERP continues to encourage us, as students, to chase our curiosity. It fosters our ability to question the world around us and our capability to change it."

"SERP has definitely been the highlight of my high school career. I started off my freshman year knowing almost nothing about research, but within a year, I was able to design an original study on how meditation impacts memory and mood. This experience greatly enhanced my knowledge in experimental ethics and statistical analysis. Now, I am working with a SUNY Downstate professor to study how genetics influence shark antibodies. Thus, I am forever grateful for the ways that SERP has shaped me..."
