School Wide Cutting Policy
Our level of success in the area of student cutting in part is attributed to the administrative, teacher, student and parent support for our school wide Cutting Policy. There is a mutual understanding of the issues and concerns among all parties with regard to cutting and how it dramatically affects the academic success of each student within our community.
The Department of Education’s Citywide Standards of Disciplinary and Intervention Measures, known as "The Discipline Code," labels occasional cutting as Level of Severity 1 – 3. Please refer to items 3 & 4 in the Discipline Code that was distributed at the beginning of the school year.
What constitutes a cut? It is a cut if a student…
- Misses his / her first period class due to lateness.
- Is absent for any part of a class without the subject class teacher’s permission, this is a cut (Passes from a Counselor / Dean are acceptable provided the student is not scheduled to take a test and the teacher approves).
- Leaves the school building without proper authorization from a school administrator. This also warrants further penalties as per the Discipline Code.
Penalties for Cutting
Repeated infractions for cutting classes carry further penalties, such as:
- Mandated conference with a parent after second cut of the term.
- AM or PM Detention with Parental Notification. Failure to report will result in further disciplinary action - as per the Disciplinary Code under "Insubordination."
- Research Paper.
- Exclusion from extracurricular activities and trips and/or delay in the distribution of the Senior Yearbook.
- Possible changes in subject class grades based on the impact on the student’s work and the class grading policy.
