Attendance and Lateness Policy
Dear Parents and Students:

In an ongoing effort to maintain a standard of excellence, and to build on our success, we have revisited and revised our current standards for classroom participation and lateness to school.

Since most SITHS students take public transportation to school, there may be an occasion where lateness is unavoidable due to a major traffic delay. It is the chronic latecomer, however, who poses the most serious of problems with regard to overall classroom participation. To minimize the chances of a student becoming a chronic latecomer, the following guidelines with regard to lateness to school and/or class have been adopted.

STANDARDS FOR CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION

Students are responsible to arrive to class and be in their assigned seat ready for instruction by the time the late bell rings.

Subject class teachers will record all student lateness to class. Signed late passes issued by a SITHS staff member will be honored. If a teacher disagrees with the signature on a late pass, it is the teacher’s responsibility to bring the issue to the attention of the subject-area supervisor for a final determination/ruling.

A “Late to School Pass” is not a valid excuse for lateness to class.

Class Participation Rubric:

  • When a student is not in class or is late to class, he or she cannot receive full credit for class participation as defined on the teacher’s grading policy/class contract. For each instance of lateness to class, meaning the student entered the classroom after the late bell, it is suggested that a teacher deduct 1 percentage point from a student’s overall Marking Period Grade, not to exceed 5 points in a given Marking Period. It is expected that point deductions will be uniformly applied without bias. .
  • When a student accumulates 4 instances of lateness in the fall or spring term, the subject area teacher will make contact with student’s parent/guardian.
  • A notation of “Lack of Participation” will be indicated on student’s report card if the student is late 5 or more times to a subject class in a given marking period. (In this area the “lateness” count is reset each marking period.)
  •
    Lateness Procedural Steps:

4th lateness – teacher makes contact with parent/guardian.
7th lateness – teacher sends on-line referral to Dean through Deadulus. Dean will apply appropriate disciplinary action.

Academic Retrieval Menu – A student may earn back 1 to 2 of the percentage points lost due to “Lack of Participation.” It is up to the teacher to select the menu item the student should complete from the list below::

  1. Extra credit research on a subject related topic not to exceed one typed page.
  2. Generic Reflection Paper not to exceed one typed page.
  3. Poster size subject related display / graphic organizer demonstrating student’s understanding of material taught on the day of the infraction.
  4. By documenting within the given subject area a total of 30 minutes of tutoring time (which must be accumulated within a three days of the infraction).

LATE TO SCHOOL / CLASS INFRACTION – BY SEMESTER
Students are expected to be in class before the late bell.
(Pd # 1 – 7:45 a.m.; Pd # 2 – 8:30 a.m., etc.)
Please note the Late to School and Late to Class Polices are inter-connected. When a student is late to school, he/she will then be also late to class. The following measures will be enacted for lateness to school:

  • Referral to Dean is generated by teacher and phone contact to parent/guardian is made by Dean.

  • Failure to report for either detention will result in an additional detention.
  • Parents/guardians will be scheduled to attend a pre-suspension hearing if their child fails to comply.
10th +
