Dear Parents and Students:
Congratulations! If attendance is the key to learning, there is a great deal of learning going on at Staten Island Technical High School. Our attendance record is something of which we can all be very proud.
Attendance Policy:
To maintain this record, and even to improve it, we have instituted the following attendance policy:
- Students are expected to maintain an attendance rate of at least 95% at all times. Attendance is reviewed every two weeks to ascertain that no one falls below this number.
- Should a student's attendance fall below 90% without a doctor's note, a conference with the student and his or her parent will be scheduled.
- If a student is absent without a doctor's note three or more times during any month, a conference with his or her parent will be scheduled. Extenuating circumstances, such as a death in the family, can be used in lieu of a doctor's note.
- Further non-excused absences may result in suspension from extra-curricular activities such as a team or club, leadership position or office, participation in school play, senior activities, including, but not limited to, late distribution of the Senior Yearbook, and other privileges to be determined by the administration and/or in consultation with the attendance committee.
- Parents should call the school on the morning of a student's absence.
- Students are to show absence notes to all of their teachers first and then bring the signed notes to Room 119. Notes should include a contact telephone number and/or parent cell phone number.
In an ongoing effort to maintain a standard of excellence, and to build on our success, we have revisited and revised our current standards for classroom participation.
Since most SITHS students take public transportation to school, there may be an occasion where lateness is unavoidable due to a major traffic delay. It is the chronic latecomer, however, who poses the most serious of problems with regard to overall classroom participation. To minimize the chances of a student becoming a chronic latecomer, the following guidelines with regard to lateness to school and/or class have been adopted.
| STANDARDS FOR CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION |
Subject class teachers will record all student lateness to class. Signed late passes issued by an SITHS staff member must be honored. If a teacher disagrees with the signature on a late pass, it is the teacher’s responsibility to bring the issue to the attention of your subject-area supervisor for a final determination/ruling. A "Late to School Pass" is not a valid excuse for lateness.
Class Participation Rubric:
- When a student is not in class or is late to class, he or she cannot receive full credit for class participation as defined on the teacher's grading policy. For each lateness to class, meaning the student entered the classroom after the late bell, it is suggested that a teacher deduct 1 percentage point from a student's overall Marking Period Grade, not to exceed 5 points in a given Marking Period. It is expected that point deductions will be uniformly applied without bias.
- Each time a student accumulates 3 latenesses per Marking Period; the subject area teacher should notify that individual's home and document the outreach by recording the name of the person he/she spoke to.
- Participation deduction is not cumulative; the count is reset each marking period.
- A report card notation of "Lack of Participation" must appear on student's report card if the student is late 5 or more times to a subject class in a given marking period.
Academic Retrieval Menu – A student may earn back 1 to 2 of the percentage points lost due to "Lack of Participation." It is up to the teacher to select the menu item the student should complete from the list below:
- Extra credit research on a subject related topic not to exceed one typed page.
- Generic Reflection Paper not to exceed one typed page.
- Poster size subject related display / graphic organizer demonstrating student’s understanding of material taught on the day of the infraction.
- By documenting within the given subject area a total of 30 minutes of tutoring time (which
must be accumulated within a three days of the infraction).
