The Tech Horizon: Inside Tech

A Tech Success: the NHS Toy Drive! -by Erin Geraghty

The National Honor Society’s annual holiday toy drive was a huge success this year thanks to the generosity of hundreds of Tech students. The drive began in late November and really picked up in momentum towards the last days before the holiday break. Thanks to the kindness of Tech students and faculty, Mr. Manzo and the NHS officers were able to deliver over 600 toys to the Seamen’s Society on Tuesday, December 22. The NHS officers were also selling plush snowmen around the school to raise money for the drive. They managed to raise over nine hundred dollars from snowman sales. This money helped the NHS to purchase another 100 toys, which were also delivered to the Seamen’s Society. Some of you may ask, what happens to the toys now?

The Seamen’s Society is a group that offers aid to both families and children on the Island. Their programs include Day Care Services, domestic violence intervention, educational support, and various preventative and youth services. The Seamen’s Society offers their aid to hundreds of children. The toys that Tech students donated will be given to children whose parents can’t afford to buy them gifts for the holidays. Oftentimes, the parents will come to pick up the toy and give it to their child as a gift from Santa or as a gift from themselves. Either way, the toys that Tech students and faculty so generously donated helped to make the holidays a little brighter for a child in need.
